How a cash loan saved us

It was when we were making our low-budget film Slime Mother that we hit our first financial wall. We'd contracted services through a local union, which we were quite happy about - we're all Democrats on the set and it sounds good to work with these guys. Now, the problem is when you're off somewhere on a shoot and you want to make sure you get as much footage as you can, you usually don't work a regular 8-hour day. We're talking more like 14 hour days, and these guys weren't having any of that. They wanted compensation right away for their extra work, and they weren't talking about cash, which was nice of them. They wanted an extra meal and I figured hey, these guys work hard...why not?

Unfortunately, we didn't have any money. That's when Dana, my PA turns to me and tells me that there's a little cash loan place in town that can cover us up to $500 without a credit check or anything - they just needed information from one of us. I figure that I've got nothing to lose by getting in the Hummer and heading down there, so I did it with some questions about getting a cash loan sitting on my brain.

• Like, how bad is the interest on a cash loan when you get it from those companies?

You could cut the tension with a knife. We weren't sure where this would lead.

I'd declared bankruptcy a few years ago and while it was cleaned up nicely, I knew that if I'd walked into a bank and asked for a cash loan, I was going to get laughed at outrightly and then removed from the building for being someone who was such a risk that the bank might implode around me.
